They were standing amidst the trunks of dozens of flowering cherry trees planted in straight rows. The bright pink blossoms filled the air with their cloying smell. Petals spiraled down to the lush carpet of moss below. The garden was so thick with these fanciful petals that it looked as though they had stumbled into a pink snowstorm. Yahgurkin wanted to gag.

Trolzor, the barkeep, had given Mulrox the notebook as a surprise a few months ago. The tiny book was wrapped in purple fabric and, on the front, was a toad outlined in gold. It was so lovely he hesitated each time before writing in it, afraid to screw it up with his messy ideas.

He tried to picture the ocean. The great blue expanse that linked him to his parents. He saw the waves, smooth as silk, slip and slither, saw them break up and roil in great spurts of foam. He pictured his parents standing out on another shore, thinking of him.
